Editing a list

In edit mode you can adjust the complete structure and all contents of your list. You activate it with "Edit" (for password-protected lists the password may be requested) and end it with "Save" – or discard all changes with "Cancel" (see below).

The editing actions of a section, category or subcategory heading (move, duplicate, move into section/category, delete) are bundled in an action menu: you open it via the ⋮ icon (three dots) next to the title field; the entries appear there with icon and text.

On a smartphone: On narrow screens "Save", "Cancel", the jump marks and the "Section" button stay pinned at the top while scrolling.

Sections

A section is either of type "General" or "Person". You can:

  • Collapse/expand – to keep long lists tidy.
  • Add – via "Section": choose type (General/Person), name and optionally an icon.
  • Rename – edit the title directly (for person sections, the name).
  • Choose symbol/icon – from the "General" or "Person" groups, or "no icon". If you pick a symbol from the other group, the section automatically switches to the matching type.
  • Duplicate – creates a copy at the end of the list. In the copy all check marks are reset, while notes and "to do" texts are kept.
  • Move up/down – change the order.
  • Delete – with a confirmation prompt (Confirm/Cancel).

A person section shows either the entered name or, as a fallback, gender symbol + age group.

Categories

Within a section (actions via the ⋮ menu in the heading):

  • Add via "New category".
  • Rename via the title field.
  • Move forward/back.
  • Move into section – moves the category into a different section (only available when there is more than one section). You pick the target section in a small chooser; the category lands at the end of that section's categories.
  • Delete – with a confirmation prompt.

Subcategories

Within a category you can add, rename, move and delete subcategories – analogous to categories (actions also via the ⋮ menu). Additionally there is:

  • Move into another category – moves the subcategory into any other category, even in a different section. In the chooser the categories are grouped by section (so identically named categories stay distinguishable). The individual sections can be expanded and collapsed; the section the subcategory currently sits in is already open. The subcategory lands at the end of the chosen category.

Anything moved is appended to the end of the target list – reorder there manually if needed.

Moving via drag & drop

In edit mode every item has a drag handle. Use it to drag the item to a new position – within the same (sub)category or into another category/subcategory. A marker shows whether the item is inserted above or below the target. If a target area is empty, a "Drag here" drop zone appears.

Saving with concurrent access

While you are editing a list, only you are responsible for the structure – others can't edit the list at the same time during that period. They can, however, still check off items or mark them "to buy". On saving, your structure wins, and this interim progress of the others is adopted automatically – so you don't have to choose and lose nothing.

Only in a rare case does a prompt appear: if you were inactive for a very long time (more than five minutes), someone else may have taken over the editing and changed the list. Then the app shows the note "Editing was taken over" and you adopt the current version with a click. Your unsaved changes are lost in that case – saving again wouldn't be possible anyway, because the list now belongs to others.

Discarding changes (Cancel)

If you misclicked in edit mode or don't want to keep your changes after all, you end the mode with "Cancel" instead of "Save". If you actually changed something in this session, a prompt follows for safety with the two options "Discard changes" and "Keep editing". If you confirm with "Discard changes", all changes made in this session (rename, add, delete, move) are discarded and the list returns to the state before editing. If you changed nothing, the prompt is skipped and edit mode ends directly.

If someone else checked off items or marked them "to buy" in the meantime (which is possible even during editing), that progress is kept – only your structural changes are discarded, not the others' progress.

Good to know

  • If a list has only a single section, its header (with collapse/expand, icon, counter, duplicate and delete) is hidden – these actions only make sense from two sections onward. Via "Section" you add another one; after that the headers reappear.
  • A newly created section, category or subcategory that stays empty and untitled is automatically discarded on saving.
  • Search is available in edit mode too, to jump straight to an item or section; the matching branches are shown filtered and all edit actions stay usable. The status filter and progress bar, by contrast, are only available in view mode.
